Behind the Trowel – Archaeological Post-Excavation Open Day!
Thursday 21st August 1-3pm
To mark Heritage Week 2025 IAC, in conjunction with IAI, would like to welcome families and interested individuals to visit our Head Office in Kilcoole, Co. Wicklow to discover the wealth of information that can be garnered during works carried out following an archaeological excavation. Come and meet our experienced team of archaeologists who will share a variety of daily processes and analyses which are undertaken to inform interpretation of archaeological remains uncovered during excavation. Chat to our osteoarchaeologists, environmental archaeologists, artefact specialists, and graphics team, and have the opportunity to experience first-hand archaeological objects from a variety of prehistoric and medieval sites. Have you ever wondered how archaeologists can find out so much from samples of soil or charred material? Find out how specialists can identify ancient wood specimens, seeds and animal bone to form our understanding of how people ate or created structures/objects. Discover how you can determine the sex and age of skeletal remains, and reveal diseases and wounds experienced by people of the past. While excavation can be very exciting and revealing, it is often only during post-excavation analyses that the most important information is gathered.
This is an accessible venue, based in the ground floor of our office, and there is parking available in the business park. It should be of interest to all ages; but may particularly appeal to children. There are no tickets for this event, operating on a ‘first come, first served’ basis. We look forward to sharing our expertise with you!
