Seanda 6 - contributions by IAC

The 2011 edition of Seanda was recently launched by the NRA. The interactive online magazine includes four contributions by IAC highlighting sites excavated in Counties Roscommon, Wexford and Kilkenny.

Shane Delaney (pages 12-15) discusses recently discovered archaeological sites identified during advanced testing on the N5 Ballaghaderreen Bypass scheme in Co. Roscommon. Excavation revealed that many of the sites comprised of burnt mounds sited in marginal bogland however evidence for Neolithic and Iron Age activity was also recorded.

Gill McLoughlin (page 37) briefly describes a possible temporary metal-working site, dating to the 9th-11th centuries AD, excavated in advance of the N11 Gorey North Motorway Service Area in Co. Wexford.

Maeve Tobin (pages 40-41) provides an update on the specialist analyses undertaken for three burial sites excavated in the townlands of Holdenstown and Kilree, Co. Kilkenny. The sites were excavated by Yvonne Whitty and Patricia Lynch (respectively) in 2007. A combination of standard osteological analysis, strontium isotope analysis, ancient DNA analysis and radiocarbon dating has highlighted the potential for investigating patterns of kinship and migration at a time when Irish society was rapidly changing.

Tim Coughlan (pages 44-47) discusses a series of large early medieval enclosure sites excavated in advance of the N9/N10 Knocktopher to Powerstown Scheme. This article highlights the evidence for domestic and funerary activity in the townlands of Knockadrina, Holdenstown, Kilree and Coneykeare, Co. Kilkenny.
