M1 Dundalk Western Bypass

Project Name: M1 Dundalk Western Bypass
Client: Louth County Council & NRA
Project Type: Test Trenching & Excavation

Phase 1 of the project comprised the excavation of 58,000sqm of test trenches along the 8.5km route corridor. The assessment located a total of 34 archaeological sites within the footprint of the motorway.

Phase 2 of the contract involved the excavation of the 34 sites identified during the Phase 1 works. The excavations were undertaken over a 22 week period using a team of 95 archaeologists. The sites varied in date from early Neolithic structures to a post-medieval mill complex. Highlights included the early medieval cemetery settlement at Balriggan, which covered and area measuring 2.3ha, the late Neolithic henge at Balregan and the major Bronze Age cemetery at Carnmore.

A monograph on describing the excavations on the scheme will be published before the end of 2011.
